Itty. Bitty. Country.

How He Loves // David Crowder Band

My first week of summer I spent in Haiti. You're probably thinking "oh it was for a mission trip!" Well you are correct. I could spend hours writing about my love for that country and how I actually wish I was there now instead of here, but that would not get us anywhere would it? So I will say this. I learned something in That small village of Neply within that very short 8 day span:
love is simple. Simplicity is love. It was never meant to be complex. It knows no borders. The same love I feel for those people is that same love that I feel here in the States.

I met 2 little boys that changed my life in that week. Clivens and Frantzsky.

Clivens is blind. That does not make him less. It only makes him different. He sees light and he plays with the light in between his little fingers. He screams at the sense of darkness and laughs in the warmth of the sunshine. He taught me that in this life, there will be black times. There will be times whenever you need someone to hold your hand and guide you back to the light whenever you can't seem to find it yourself. That someone is God. And God is the light. In Him, there is no dark. None at all.

Frantzsky has cerebral palsy and clubbed feet. He doesn't look or act like the average 4 year old. All he wants is to be held, and I held him the whole week. He was like my adopted child. At the end of the week, his smile woke me up in the mornings and caused me to cry at the end of the day. He loved unconditionally even though he had no way to communicate with me. Frantzsky is my sunshine; he is my light.

That week changed us all.... So my question is this:
When is the next flight to Port-Au-Prince, Haiti?

Oh William.

"Be not afraid of greatness. Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them." -William Shakespeare

Take A Walk // Passion Pit

Shakespeare is my life. I love him. I read his works probably more than the average stable minded person should, but I don't care.
This quote. "Be not afraid..... Of greatness."
Who would be afraid of a thing as greatness? I am. I am afraid. I want to accomplish world changing things. I want be extraordinary, but unfortunately, I'm not cut out for that job. My job is to be a student. At a high school. And work hard so I can get to college. What if we limit ourselves? We are the next generation.
WE ARE LIMITLESS. Why aren't we living like it? We have technology to discover. Excuse. We have school and studying and tests!. Excuse. We have "problems" in our lives. Excuse. We have run out of excuses. There's no reason for this nonsense anymore. I strive for greatness. I want to be great. I want to be the guy that at the end of the war, I'm standing on the hill waving the flag of my generation proudly for everyone to see. But now? I want to hide it in a tree. But hope is not lost. Not even close. My favorite preacher once said, "As long as there's breath, there's hope." Hope was at the bottom of Pandora's box. Hope is never lost, sometimes we just lose it in the fog sometimes.

The Law of The Princess

ILet It Go // Idina Menzel
(or as John Travolta would say "Adele Dazeem"... Like what on earth is that?)

Today I accomplished a goal. I never thought in a million years I would ever, ever do this. But, oh, today I did. And I did it with my best friend. We searched high and low, passing through 4 towns before I could finally reach its perfection. Oh, the road was brutal. So many sparkles, colors, ruffles, mirrors, and zippers. So much awkward tugging and asking random strangers for their opinions. I've been against it since it was announced. I've wanted to skip it to go play laser tag. How on earth do people expect me to ask someone to go with? but I did that too. So, I finally just let it go ;) and.....drumroll...found a prom dress. *cue over dramatic gasp*. Yes, I know, fine fellows, "Hippies don't go to Prom! They are all like 'anti-prom' and all that! Ewwww! You're a disgrace to your culture!" Precisely, my dear brethren. Hippies don't go to proms..... So therefore, now you've got it! I have to go! Plus, it's going to be a ton of fun!
I asked this super chill guy in my Photography class to go with me and he said yes! I'm totally stoked!
Anyway, I'm a pure ginger so you would think I would get a blue or green dress, and thats exactly what I shopped for All. Day. Long. But we went to this one store and found a neon orange/pinkish dress that I completely fell in love with, and whoop di doo. Plot twist! That's the one I'm getting..... Hold for the applause.........
All right... Crickets.

Anyway, so the title of this post is "The Law of The Princess". What I am simply trying to prove here is that every girl has a law that she must follow to enable herself be a princess on P R O M night. Did that make since to you? No? Go back and read like 3 more times and I'm sure it'll click (the witness aka me).
Law 1. If she doesn't feel beautiful in a dress, you can guarantee she won't be having a very good time.
---> I mean, if you don't love yourself and aren't comfortable in your own skin, how will you be able to let people see the real you? Don't be afraid of what they think! Be yourself. You are the most beautiful and spectacular that way. I mean look at me! I'm an open book, I've just got a few pages torn out.
Law 2. It's all about the hair.
---> I don't know if this goes for everybody but it sure does for me. If my hair doesn't look good, the world must be coming to an end. I'm such a perfectionist when it comes to hair-good grief. I'm sure it's a medical condition. Oh well. But I'm not saying it has to look good 100% of the time. Like for me, a majority of the time, I wear my hair natural to school. And if on a particular day its looking extra nappy, then I will fix it all up and such. I'm saying on a special event, like Prom, it better be looking like a field of luscious wheat... And I mean that in the best way possible. :)
Law 3. Be proud of your fella.
---> Your man gave up his time, effort, and probably money for you and Prom. Be proud and appreciative of him! I mean he could've said no; but he didn't. This night will be fun for him too, so enjoy it together!
---> add on: most likely, if you aren't dating the dude, he's probably going to want to hang out with other people besides you. So please... Don't get mad when he dances with someone else during a slow song! Chillax! I mean if he dances with everyone but you, them you got a problem. For real though, don't be arm and arm the whole time. Give each other room to breathe for Pete's sake!

Well, I think that about wraps up this post. I hope everyone is having a fantastic week like I am! Heyyyy, it's Spring Break; of course I'm living it up! Frozen came out on DVD yesterday and you betcha I got it! Well, really my sister got it, but you got the point! Hence, you see where I got the song of the day from? Hint hint wink wink. Anyway see ya!

Rebellious.

-theThis is how stuff will work on this. I will first put a song for the day. When you read this you can simply skip past it or you can open your little youtube, soundcloud, spotify, or whatever app and listen to it, but be fair warned. They are usually thought provoking ballads from people you didn't know existed. So today's is....drum roll please.... Into The Wild // Lewis Watson

Then this is where I'll start with the whole juicy blog post. So here it goes....

My first blogpost on my new blog. How extravagantly exciting. You're probably wondering why on earth is this blog called "The Life of a Not-So Modern Day Hippie." Let me explain, my dear friend. The is an article of English grammar. Life is well, life. Your ups and downs, your embarresing (I have no clue how to spell that) misfortunes, and your Rocky Balboa moments. Of and are also small but crucial parts of the English language. Not-So. People consider me a hippie, but I consider that term absurd. Modern Day. We are living in the 21st century... So you know that makes me modern...and like, living. Hippie. Previously, I said that that term is degrading. I know. So why on earth would I put it in my blog title? I like that better than "hipster."  I AM MY OWN PERSON, PEOPLE. Labels such as those should be done by your own doing, not by someone else. And now, don't hippies like live on the road and go to concerts and wear tie dye? Well yes, but isn't the art of the hippie to do the opposite of what society says? Therefore, they are deemed "rebels". My goal, is to be a rebel. Society said to be size Zero and live in a mansion. Well, I can assure I am no size zero and I absolutely do not live in a mansion. Fight the stereotype. Be who you were meant to be, not what people tell you to be; because if you live your life under society's dictatorship, you won't know who you are when you need to. So yeah, that's pretty deep for a first blog huh?
